My Interpretation of Self-Contained Green Warrant Rules

I wanted to create a blog post covering specifically what I consider an acceptable solution. With so many interpretations of the new laws out there, I think it's important to have an understanding of what individual inspectors accept or don't accept before booking an inspection. If in doubt reach out

*Text inside the stars* - This is from the gazette and what I interpret from this

Toilets

The biggest change from Blue to Green and from what I've read online the biggest point of frustration for self-contained inspections.

*Toilet is useable within the vehicle* - A toilet doesn't have to be able to be used with the bed made up but is functional to use. Moving part of the bed "easily" or in a cupboard on a rail to slide out is fine. Lots of ways to comply but communication with your inspector is key as well.

Wastewater storage tank

*Wastewater storage tank vent outlet is installed at a height that safely prevents wastewater leakage* - Vent must come from your wastewater container, go up to in line with your sink and then to its outlet. I don't think it needs to go above flood level but should be easy to identify your wastewater is full hence going above the bottom of the sink bowl.

*Wastewater storage tank vent is fitted with a means to prevent the entry of birds and vermin into the system* - A vent large enough for a bird or vermin to enter needs to have gauze or a purpose-built fitting. Mice can squeeze through a gap as small as 10mm (the diameter of a pencil) so even the hose pipe-sized vent needs to have some form of cover to allow air to pass but not mice.

*Blackwater, including greywater if blackwater and greywater are combined, is stored in either removable cassettes that are compatible with the vehicle’s toilet OR one or more fixed tanks that have an isolating valve that allows the system to be safely emptied* - Portable Greywater tank don't need an isolation valve but fixed tanks do.

Freshwater storage tank

*Water storage tanks are made of UV resistant materials OR stored in a way that avoids exposure to sunlight* - Emphasis on the OR. Simple. If your freshwater storage tank isn't opaque (able to be seen through) it needs to be protected from the sun via a cupboard or curtain.
