Why and how do I ventilate my 25L waste container

Why do I need a vent?

It's for your health. The vent removes any contaminated air from the waste container to the outside so you don't breath it in - These containers get gross quick and in a small space are even worse. I've seen mould all over these containers and without a vent you're potentially breathing this is in every night and every time you drive as water sloshes around or water drains into the container.

How do I add a vent - Its sounds hard

If i was going to try and add a vent to my 25L container I would do this.

Buy these products basically in order of install as well from the container. Everything is available at mitre 10, bunnings or online, and is probably around $30-50.

Hose - 12/13mm garden hose    /  20mm Plastic Nipple   /      12mm universal hose adaptor

13mm hose adaptor                  Insect mesh                               PTFE Tape

Hose Clamp               /                    Pipe clip

I would also want to have access to a drill and a 15mm drill bit or holesaw.

I would drill a small hole in the top of the container - The easiest way I've found to get the right size is to drill the 15mm hole then use the very end of the drill bit to slowly enlarge the hole little bit at a time, testing the thread nipple every few mm - slow and steady and right on the end of the drill bit has been successful for me.

Into the hole insert a PTFE thread taped 20mm Nipple - This makes it watertight and airtight. Lots of YouTube videos on this and don't forget to scratch your thread fitting a little bit as it means it wont spin.

Next screw the universal adaptor on to the nipple

This is it for the container. Easy as that

Next find a bung on the floor or drill a 13-15mm hole in the floor away from anything structural and check underneath before you drill - I'm not a mechanic so seek advice if your worried.

You'll need around 500mm going out of the vehicle and enough hose to go to the underside of where the sink is installed - some people will say it needs to go 50mm above the flood level but I'm yet to be shown a regulation that states this but engage with your inspector as everyone's opinion may differ.

On one end of the pipe use a small amount of mesh and and the hose clamp to stop bugs and insects going after your water, youll want to find a spot away from any openings into the vehicle and cable tie or fix this to the chassis where it wont get damage and air can flow freely. No kinks!

On the inside the hose goes up to the sink and attaches to the underside of the benchtop and then back down to the container. At the end of this attach the hose connector so it can click on and off the adaptor.

A few clips to hold the hose in place and you should be good to go.

There's lots of ways to do this but the main goal is to have a pipe removing air from the container as water is either added or sloshes around in the container - You don't want to breath this air in.
